#FoodFilms reimagines recipe videos in the style of famous directors.

The others in the series:

What if Tarantino made Spaghetti & Meatballs?

What if Michael Bay made Waffles?

What if Alfonso Cuaron made pancakes?

Quick Links: 10 Things I Know About You and Your Books

January 30, 2017 by Publetariat

Quick links, bringing you great articles on writing from all over the web.

Jenny Hansen knows 10 things about you, and I have to admit she pretty much nailed me.  After reading Tolkien as a child, I spent many a day searching for Ents in the forest behind my house. Head on over to Writers In The Storm and see how many items fit you.

10 Things I Know About You and Your Books

By Jenny Hansen

From our earliest moments, most writers are avid readers. We devour books – for story, for Craft, for new worlds and new ideas.

We have To Be Read piles (TBR for short) that are taller than small children. Our favorite authors and characters become our friends.

I don’t know if we become students of the written word because we love to read or if we read because we were born to love the written word. All that chicken and egg Zen is well beyond me.

I just flat out love books and every writer I know does too. You might even describe us as “obsessed with the printed word.” It takes a lot of love to go through what we must do to yank our stories from our hearts onto the page.

If you are a writer, there are things that I know about you and your books:

1. I know you get uncomfortable when you are “bookless.”
If you are stuck somewhere without a book, you will begin reading any words available – shampoo bottles, food labels, billboard signs. Whatever. Books and magazines are preferred, but in a pinch, any words will smooth your soul. (Do you keep a bag of books in your car trunk like I do?)

Just For Fun – Generate your own random fantasy map

November 9, 2016 by Publetariat

Just for fun – because everyone deserves a break, especially today.

Want to escape into your own fantasy world? Need some inspiration for NaNoWriMo? Check out this cool fantasy map generator at Martin O’Leary‘s site!

Generating fantasy maps

I made this in three minutes
I made this in three minutes

Inspiration

I wanted to make maps that look like something you’d find at the back of one of the cheap paperback fantasy novels of my youth. I always had a fascination with these imagined worlds, which were often much more interesting than whatever luke-warm sub-Tolkien tale they were attached to.

At the same time, I wanted to play with terrain generation with a physical basis. There are loads of articles on the internet which describe terrain generation, and they almost all use some variation on a fractal noise approach, either directly (by adding layers of noise functions), or indirectly (e.g. through midpoint displacement). These methods produce lots of fine detail, but the large-scale structure always looks a bit off. Features are attached in random ways, with no thought to the processes which form landscapes. I wanted to try something a little bit different.

Fun – Gotta Pun ‘Em All: The Classics as Pokemon

Do you Pokemon or know someone who does? Then you will totally enjoy these classic story titles re-imagined as Pokemon titles. Got to collect them all!

Gotta Pun ‘Em All: The Classics as Pokemon

Ashley Holstrom 07-12-16

pokeman_goPokemon Go is going wild, y’all. It’s a free smartphone app that dropped on July 6 and uses your GPS to show you the Pokemon that are always around you in the real world (Okay, not really. It’s just a game, people).

When you’re walking around, open the app and you’ll find a Charmander in your kitchen, or a Shellder in your bedroom, or a Jigglypuff in your office at work. Your favorite coffeeshops are turned into Pokestops, your grocery stores are turned into gyms. It’s taking over the world.

And you better believe we Poke-punned a bunch of classics for ya. Sure, there are the obvious ones — Harry Potter and the Pokeball, Pokemon Farm — but… Just, here. We gotta Catch-22 ’em all.

For Fun – Brush up on your typing skills

September 23, 2016 by Publetariat

Just for fun – because everyone deserves a break

Unless you are using a pen and paper, (more power to you!) you are using a qwerty keyboard. For a little Friday fun, why not brush up on your typing skills with a typing game. It is like the old video game Galaga, you have to type the letters to shoot them out of the sky before they land on you. It gets harder.

Helpful hint, watch out for the big words, they can spawn babies! Also it does play music but when you start a game, in the upper top left corner is a little faint button that loads the options, and you can turn the volume off there. What is your best high score? zty.pe

I apologize in advance for the time spent on this. But hey, you are improving your typing skills!

Just for fun: 12 Things Every Book-Lover Has Said To Their Friends

July 25, 2016 by Publetariat

12 Things Every Book-Lover Has Said To Their Friends

Charlotte Ahlin

May 25

Reading can be a bit of a solitary activity. Most book lovers spend hours upon hours in bed/on the subway/in a bathtub, buried deep in the fictional realm. So when we finally emerge back into the real world, it’s nice to have a supportive circle of friends who we can harass about reading our favorite books. And there are a few things that every single book-lover has said to their friends.

As book-lovers, we brand ourselves as quiet and intellectual. We shake our heads at the hardcore sports fans, the indie rock enthusiasts, and the cinema snobs. And yet, when it comes down to it, we’re just as guilty of being motormouth fanatics. We lecture our friends on the relative virtues of e-readers vs paper books, we muse on the cultural stigma against fanfiction, and we need to talk through every major character death in every series we read. We harangue our friends who don’t read as much, and we constantly beg book recommendations off of our friends who read more (as much as we hate to admit that anyone reads more than we do).

So here’s a big shout out to all the friends of book-lovers who put up with us and our obsessions. And here are some of the things that every reader is guilty of saying to their friends:

1. “You HAVE to read this!”

Deals! Remains of the Day: Scribd Offering Unlimited Audiobooks Over the Summer

July 17, 2016 by Publetariat

Deals – Cool deals or offers you might be interested in

I am sharing this in place of today’s Quick Link because I don’t want you to miss out. Full disclosure, I don’t make a penny off of any of this. I have friends who are very much into audiobooks and this seems like a great way to relax this summer, along with the other offers in the Lifehacker post

~ * ~

Deals are very nice
Deals are very nice!

From now until the end of September, Scribd is offering unlimited access to over 5,000 audiobooks to subscribers. Sounds like a good way to pass the time while the summer heat keeps us languid.

  • A Scribd subscription costs $8.99 and normally comes with three books and one audio book per month, so the unlimited book buffet until September 30th is a nice perk. There’s also a free two week trial; it’s a nice promotion if you find yourself with a lot of free time and eager ears this summer. [Scribd]
  • In other news, Netflix has a new tool for making a movie playlist called Flixtape. It’s a fun idea with half-baked execution; you can only add six titles, and you can’t include individual episodes from shows. A mixtape with your favorite episodes would be a fun to share! But this is more like finding a cardboard box full of discarded VHS tapes on the sidewalk. [TechCrunch]
