October 8, 2016 is Indie Author Day!

October 10, 2016October 4, 2016 by Publetariat

Publetariat was started as a movement to celebrate and champion the indie author. So we are very happy to support Indie Author day, October 8, 2016.

self-e_indieauthorday_logo_tshirt-01-e1462823856596During the Inaugural Indie Author Day on October 8, 2016, libraries from all across North America will host their own local author events with the support of the Indie Author Day team. In addition to these local programs, each library’s indie community will come together for an hour-long digital gathering at 2 pm Eastern featuring Q&A with writers, agents and other industry leaders. Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity for libraries and authors to connect on both local and global levels!

Check to see if there is a library near you hosting events or if that doesn’t work for you they are having a webcast, open to all, at 2 pm Eastern Time.

For Fun – Brush up on your typing skills

September 23, 2016 by Publetariat

Just for fun – because everyone deserves a break

Unless you are using a pen and paper, (more power to you!) you are using a qwerty keyboard. For a little Friday fun, why not brush up on your typing skills with a typing game. It is like the old video game Galaga, you have to type the letters to shoot them out of the sky before they land on you. It gets harder.

Helpful hint, watch out for the big words, they can spawn babies! Also it does play music but when you start a game, in the upper top left corner is a little faint button that loads the options, and you can turn the volume off there. What is your best high score? zty.pe

~ * ~

I apologize in advance for the time spent on this. But hey, you are improving your typing skills!

Just for fun: Harry Potter on your wall

August 8, 2016 by Publetariat

Just for fun – because everyone deserves a break

I love Harry Potter and this is such a great idea but you could do this with any book. If my kids were not all grown I would do a classic Winnie the Pooh along with one of the illustrations. Probably the one where Pooh tries to be a cloud and get honey. Which book would you do? Head on over to Culture N Lifestyle to learn more.

Just for fun: 12 Things Every Book-Lover Has Said To Their Friends

12 Things Every Book-Lover Has Said To Their Friends

Charlotte Ahlin

May 25

Reading can be a bit of a solitary activity. Most book lovers spend hours upon hours in bed/on the subway/in a bathtub, buried deep in the fictional realm. So when we finally emerge back into the real world, it’s nice to have a supportive circle of friends who we can harass about reading our favorite books. And there are a few things that every single book-lover has said to their friends.

As book-lovers, we brand ourselves as quiet and intellectual. We shake our heads at the hardcore sports fans, the indie rock enthusiasts, and the cinema snobs. And yet, when it comes down to it, we’re just as guilty of being motormouth fanatics. We lecture our friends on the relative virtues of e-readers vs paper books, we muse on the cultural stigma against fanfiction, and we need to talk through every major character death in every series we read. We harangue our friends who don’t read as much, and we constantly beg book recommendations off of our friends who read more (as much as we hate to admit that anyone reads more than we do).

So here’s a big shout out to all the friends of book-lovers who put up with us and our obsessions. And here are some of the things that every reader is guilty of saying to their friends:

1. “You HAVE to read this!”

Deals! Remains of the Day: Scribd Offering Unlimited Audiobooks Over the Summer

July 17, 2016 by Publetariat

Deals – Cool deals or offers you might be interested in

I am sharing this in place of today’s Quick Link because I don’t want you to miss out. Full disclosure, I don’t make a penny off of any of this. I have friends who are very much into audiobooks and this seems like a great way to relax this summer, along with the other offers in the Lifehacker post

~ * ~

Deals are very nice
Deals are very nice!

From now until the end of September, Scribd is offering unlimited access to over 5,000 audiobooks to subscribers. Sounds like a good way to pass the time while the summer heat keeps us languid.

  • A Scribd subscription costs $8.99 and normally comes with three books and one audio book per month, so the unlimited book buffet until September 30th is a nice perk. There’s also a free two week trial; it’s a nice promotion if you find yourself with a lot of free time and eager ears this summer. [Scribd]
  • In other news, Netflix has a new tool for making a movie playlist called Flixtape. It’s a fun idea with half-baked execution; you can only add six titles, and you can’t include individual episodes from shows. A mixtape with your favorite episodes would be a fun to share! But this is more like finding a cardboard box full of discarded VHS tapes on the sidewalk. [TechCrunch]

American Idol for writers? Skrawl – a brand new world of collaborative storytelling…

January 12, 2016 by Publetariat

Occasionally I get contacted by over excited people who want to share something totally awesome and new with me that will make everyone a lot of money. Since I am trying to keep this site indie and clean I usually say no.  But every once in a while, there is actually something cool that I think you will like.

Full disclosure – I am not making one penny off of this. This is a really awesome site that some of you might enjoy, and the people I have talked with seem super nice.

skrawl-large-0d29837054232cb9016716f8f30f6583So now that is out of the way, let me introduce you to Skrawl.com.

Skrawl.com is a collaborative and competitive group writing website. Users have the choice to enter into a writing competition based on a theme or topic, then the readers view the entries and vote on their favorite. The winner’s entry becomes a part of the story and that process continues until the story is finished. Writing styles can range from stories, scripts, articles and debates while breaking off into numerous categories from Action & Adventure to Fan-Fiction. It is free to enter, which is always nice. They also have “writing challenges” where you can win prizes, on top of bragging rights.

It looks like a great way to get some practice in, meet other writers, and possibly get some exposure. Plus you get to vote on your favorites to move up.  If anyone joins, could you come back and let us know how you like it and also give us a chance to root for you!

Anyone else taking the Goodreads 2016 challenge?

January 5, 2016 by Publetariat

Part of being a good writer is being a good reader. Goodreads is having a challenge, where you pledge how many books you are going to read. I did it last year but forgot to register my books. I am vowing to do better this year, but have kept my goal low since I really want to be able to put some time into Publetariat. If I can read a new book, once a month, and remember to log it, I will be quite happy. There are giveaways as well! Let us know how many books you are planning to read in the comments! We can cheer each other on!

~ * ~

Want to Read More This Year? Join the 2016 Reading Challenge!

Forget about drinking more water or getting in shape! Our favorite New Year’s resolution is definitely this: Read More Books. And we’re guessing it’s yours, too. Make it easier by creating a reading goal and tracking your progress with the 2016 Reading Challenge on Goodreads!

Will it be one book every other month? Or maybe one book a week? A day? It’s up to you! Your goal can be any size. To get started, just choose the number of books you’d like to read this year.

Not sure what to read next? Don’t worry! Here are a few ways to build your want-to-read list on Goodreads:

– Recommendations: To get recommendations tailored just for you, rate books you’ve already read. The more books you rate, the better your recommendations will be!
– Giveaways: Did you know you can enter book giveaways for a chance to win free books?
– Lists: You can also browse the thousands of lists on Listopia—where you’ll find categories ranging from classic (Best Books of the 21st Century) to niche (Best Alpha Male Alien Meets Human Heroine Romance).
– Goodreads Choice Award winners: Peruse the results of the recently announced 2015 Goodreads Choice Awards, with winners and runners-up in 20 categories!

And it never hurts to have some social support when working toward a goal, so check out the many Goodreads groups that host reading challenges across every topic, theme, and genre imaginable.

“A Christmas Carol” read by Neil Gaiman

January 3, 2016December 21, 2015 by Publetariat

Today’s we have a special treat for the holidays. The New York Public Library offers a special reading of Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol” by Neil Gaiman, using Dicken’s personal copy and notes.

~ * ~

Even huge Charles Dickens fans may not know that A Christmas Carol is organized in five stanza-like sections called “staves.” They might not know the author’s only surviving “prompt” copy of the book, that is, Dickens’s own annotated version used for live readings, is held at the New York Public Library. But it’s without a doubt that Neil Gaiman gives one of the greatest deliveries of the classic holiday tale. Made up to resemble a nineteenth century man by Jeni Ahlfeld, the author was transformed for a performance at the New York Public Library, and his engaging reading captured the liveliness of Dickens’ prose. And so, as is our NYPL holiday tradition, we’re sharing Gaiman’s delightful performance of A Christmas Carol. We hope you enjoy it as part of your family tradition too.

Infographic: Why writers make great friends

January 3, 2016December 15, 2015 by Publetariat

Today’s offering is from the FreelancersUnion site, (because not all writers are book writers), which shares this lovely post on why writers make great friends. Written by Brendan Brown, the founder of Global English Editing and The Expert Editor, two online editing and proofreading companies.

~ * ~

Friends are important in so many ways. They help mold us as people and will be the first to intervene when our heads get too big, or taste in clothes too poor.

However, do writers make good friends?

On the one hand, writers are prone to alcoholism, cigarette addiction, and severe bouts of melancholy (at least according to the internet and stereotyping).

Nevertheless, I think writers have certain qualities that other civilians cannot match as friends. As an editor I have made friends with plenty of writers, and every one of them has added value to my life in some weird and wonderful ways.

The infographic below outlines 8 little-known reasons why writers make great friends.

1. Writers are knowledgeable

‘Knowledgeable’ probably wasn’t on your list of most desirable traits in a potential friend, but think about it. Nobody likes awkward silence. Lulls in conversation tend to come about when there’s nothing to talk about, but writers are often repositories of information ranging from the random to the hilarious (and inevitably the tedious).

When you’re at a party, sit next to the writer and you’ll hit the conversational jackpot: they’ll not only be up to date on the latest world events, but will also fill you in on what Kim Kardashian’s booty has to do with feminism.

2. Writers are great plus-ones at dinner parties

Offer a writer free food and they’ll rarely flake out on you.

Some might be in need of a good meal, being that they survive near the breadline on a daily basis or have been trying to finish NaNoWriMo and preparing food simply wasn’t an option.

Others may well be well on their way to a successful career in journalism or travel writing, but have never quite shaken those nightmares about being strangled in their sleep by ramen noodles. A catered-for dinner party is like therapy for them.

3. It’s hard to bore a writer

Most of your friends are probably fed up with hearing about your ex or how unreasonable your coworkers are. Instead of venting to them, turn to your writer friend.

Writers lap this stuff up. For you it’s catharsis, for them primary research. They’re probably working on a series of essays about how the monotony of everyday life is crushing the creativity out of a generation. Get ready for engaged questioning – “but why do you think you feel that way? Do you think there are societal forces preying on your mind, creating an unrealistic image of who you should be?”

If your rant is their brainstorm session and you’re helping each other out, isn’t back scratching what friendship’s all about?

4. Writers ‘get’ rejection

Even when they professionally benefit from your pain, writers are compassionate. Not because they’re inherently better than regular civilians, but because they’ve been through it all too: mind-melting jobs in call centers, getting dumped for spending too much time on their work, and being isolated from human contact for days or weeks at a time while writing.

Writers know your pain. Most of all, though, writers get rejected a lot.

You got turned down for a promotion this week? Your writer friend probably got turned down for three article pitches today. When you need a shoulder to cry on, writers are there to be your friend. But most importantly, they’ll insist you get back up on your feet and try again.

5. You might get a character named after you

Look at your friendship with a writer as a potential investment in future notoriety. If you’re in your writer friend’s inner circle while they’re working on a novel, you might get a character named after, or even loosely based on, you.

There are many examples of this, known as Tuckerization, but a notable one is Philip K. Dick naming fellow author Poul Anderson in his short story “Waterspider”.
